Winner of the 2013 Branford Boase Award

Hurray for Dave Shelton who has won the leading prize for a first novel for children with his extraordinary book, A Boy and a Bear in a Boat.

On one of the hottest days of the year so far a crowd of well-wishers gathered at the Oxford offices of David Fickling Books to celebrate the publisher’s transition from imprint to independent publisher.  

On Thursday 11 July DFB celebrated the shortlisting of A Boy and a Bear in a Boat by Dave Shelton and Black Arts by Andrew Prentice and Jonathan Weil for the Branford Boase Award – the leading prize for best first children’s novel.  

We're delighted that Andy Mulligan's extraordinary novel of adventure and friendship is going to be a film – produced by Stephen Daldry, with a script by Richard Curtis, and starring Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen and Wagner Moura.

In the summer of 2013 DFB has been an independent publishing house, and our first independent titles launched in June 2014.
